What is ADSL?ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) provides high-speed Internet access using regular copper telephone lines. It works by splitting your existing telephone line signal into two frequency ranges, one for normal voice calls and the other for data. The asymmetric nature of the line means that data can travel faster downstream (from the Internet to the user) than upstream (from the user to the Internet). This makes it particularly suitable for applications where customers expect to receive more data than they transmit; such as for web browsing, particularly web sites containing large images or audio/video files. What are the benefits of Netlink Solutions ADSL?The speed - the connection is up to ten times faster than a normal modem connection. Included with this e-mail are full installation instructions for our supported modems and micro-filters.What is a dynamic IP address?Every device connected to the Internet needs a numeric IP address. These numbers make it possible to route information like website data to your machine. It serves a similar function as your postcode does for your mail. Netlink Solutions Internet provides dynamic IP addressing for its ADSL service. A dynamic IP address may be different each time you reconnect to the service. These IPs are distributed from a pool maintained on our servers. We will maintain at least enough addresses in the pool to correspond to the total number of customers that are subscribed to the service. Can I have a static IP address? We provide unlimited static IP Address's as standard at no extra cost. Are any ports blocked? No restrictions are placed on ports or any individual Internet services. Can I connect a number of computers to the Netlink Solutions ADSL service? The Netlink Solutions ADSL service allows as many machines as you wish to connect and use the ADSL line at the same time. What is contention?Contention, usually described in terms of a ratio, represents how much your available bandwidth is shared with other ADSL users. For Netlink Solutions ADSL, the contention ratio is 50:1 or 20:1, meaning that there are 512kbps of download bandwidth available for every 50 users or 20 users depending on service selected. It does not mean that every time a new ADSL user is added to your local exchange, your connection will slow down. Contention represents aggregation across the entire BT DSL network. As most people.s connections are idle most of the time (reading web pages does not consume bandwidth once the page has been downloaded), there is generally enough bandwidth available to deliver data as fast as your connection can go.What do I need to have to be able to get ADSL?A BT phone line Your local Exchange needs to be ADSL enabled, your phone line needs to pass a line quality test, and PC or a Mac with a USB port or ethernet port. What is a micro-filter?A micro-filter (sometimes called a splitter) is used to prevent the two frequency ranges used for voice/fax calls and Internet traffic from conflicting. Any conflicts between the two ranges would prevent the use of the telephone when accessing the Internet. A micro-filter is effectively a barrier between the two frequency ranges. You will need to connect a micro-filter to all of the telephone sockets that are in use, including the one connected to your ADSL modem. You will need to connect a micro-filter to all of the telephone sockets that are in use, including the one connected to your ADSL modem. Please note that because of technical limitations, telephone lines are only capable of supporting a maximum of 4 micro-filters. Micro-filters are required to split the telephone line into two frequencies to support ADSL and voice. The micro-filter provides two sockets . one for your telephone, and one for the ADSL modem. A micro-filter is required for every phone socket connected to the line with the ADSL service installed; otherwise you may experience interference on your voice calls. Can I use my own ADSL modem or do I have to use the one supplied by Netlink Solutions Internet? You can attach any BT approved ADSL modem or router to the service. Can I use an ADSL router instead of a modem? There are a number of products that combine an ADSL modem with an Ethernet hub/router, which will work. Can I run a web or mail server?Due to its asymmetric nature, ADSL is not the ideal connection method for running servers. However, there are no service restrictions, so running a computer with a web or mail server is possible. We are happy to assist with configuration of these servers. If I use my own equipment, do I need any special settings?Depending on the equipment you use, you may be required to enter settings for the ADSL service. These settings are: Connection Type: PPPoA or RFC2364 VPI: 0 VCI: 38 Encapsulation: VCMUX or VC based (Not LLC based) Bitrate: VBR or UBR (variable/unspecified, not constant)Do you supply modems and routers?Yes, we can supply out of the box ready to go modems and routers for ADSL fully pre-configured by our support team.Contact Sales* Indicates a required piece of information. |
